Preschool Teacher Position Description

The Preschool teacher is responsible for developing a cohesive teaching team, coordinating the curriculum, and managing the day-to-day operational activities of the classroom. Teachers must understand children’s cognitive, social, emotional and physical development in order to ensure a safe and stimulating classroom environment where children are actively engaged and encouraged to succeed. The Teacher must be skilled in communicating with both children and adults in order to meet the needs of the children, effectively guide co-teachers/teacher assistants, and create partnerships with families. This position reports to the Preschool Director in collaboration with the Pastor and Principal.


Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and implement educational curriculum and religious curriculum by developing classroom activities based on developmentally appropriate practices and early learning standards.
  • Lead by example; encourage teaching team success through modeling and coaching.
  • Plan individual and group age-appropriate activities to actively engage children and encourage social, cognitive and emotional growth.
  • Maintain frequent communications with parents through informal discussions, weekly emails, progress reports, and parent-teacher conferences.
  • Ensure all center policies and state regulations are met.
  • Ensure a healthy classroom environment – including maintaining appropriate hygiene and cleanliness standards and safety and security of children.
  •  Maintain accurate records, forms and files.
  • Maintain a professional development plan to ensure continuous quality improvement.
  • All other duties as necessary for creating a successful preschool program.


Educational and Experience Requirements

  • Lead Teachers: Preferred Associate’s Degree in early childhood education or related field of study with experience in the early childhood field
  • Assistant Teachers: Minimum of a High School Diploma with experience in the early childhood field
  • All employees must pass a FBI and BCI background check, must pass health screening and must complete Protecting God’s Children and all Health and Safety classes


Additional Knowledge, Skills and Physical Requirements

  • Requirements include the ability to take frequent walks, use hands and fingers, handle objects, tools or controls, talk to and hear voices at many levels. May also be required to kneel, bend, squat and get up quickly. Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs. repeatedly throughout the day.
  •  Strong oral and written communication skills and basic computer skills.
  • A strong understanding of child development.

Salary and Benefits

  • Wages are determined by education, experience and job duties
  • All part time and full time Lead Teachers are paid for all school breaks, professional development days, conference and records days
  • All part time Assistant Teachers are paid for school breaks and professional development days.
  • Full time employees are eligible for Insurance and Retirement packages
  • All fees for required health and safety courses and professional development courses are paid for by St. Catharine
